This website contains digest summaries of virtually all decisions published by the California courts since August, 1992 relating to tort and personal injury law and practice. Each summary is a sentence or two in length and is an abbreviated description of the decision. The summaries are designed to help you decide whether to read the cited case. They also contain cross references to related authority. Most of the time, subsequent history is indicated at the beginning of the summary, but current status of all cases should be checked before citing or relying on them. To search, see the Index and Search Page.
Lists of citations to cases on various subjects and issues can be found in the Citation Lists Index. Most were updated the last time a decision belonging on the list was published, but it's always a good idea to check for later cases.
Every month since February 1999, I've spent a few minutes on each tape in an attempt to repair our broken English. Sometimes, I point out common grammatical, usage, spelling, or punctuation errors. Sometimes, I just express my feelings about phrases I find annoying. In response to many requests, I'm posting "Repairing Our Broken English" segments from tapes issued in the months indicated. Since they were meant to be spoken aloud, they are not always in the form one should use for written English. Since they were spoken a month apart, the introductions may seem repetitive.
The cases are discussed at much greater length on Finz's ADVANCE TAPES on California Tort and Personal Injury Law (also available as audio CDs). In addition, the discussion on tape (or audio CD) describes the condition of the law as it existed prior to the subject decision and shows how the decision alters or affects it. Discussions also provide suggestions for integrating the change into practice. For more information about the tapes and audio CDs, go to the Membership Page.
